Extended Abstract
In Islam, considerable emphasis is placed on eloquence, refined speech, and thoughtful verbal expression. Qur’anic teachings, grounded in a profound understanding of human nature and psychological mechanisms, offer a set of practical guidelines for cultivating a healthy individual and social life. Thoughtful and measured speech emerges from a calm, coherent mode of thinking and a well-balanced personality, whereas unstable and anxious cognition—lacking a firm foundation—fails to produce wise and prudent discourse. Accordingly, the quality of human speech reflects underlying cognitive, emotional, and personality structures.
The highest model of verbal conduct is found in the divine speech of the Qur’an, which, both in content and expression, is characterized by beauty, politeness, clarity, eloquence, strength, and wisdom. Likewise, the sayings of the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them), rooted in divine revelation, embody thoughtful, rational, wise, and appealing forms of expression. The foundation of eloquent and measured speech lies in the speaker’s kindness, wisdom, and intellectual maturity; for gentle, respectful, and pleasant speech can only emanate from a personality marked by moderation and insight. Constructive and normative verbal expressions are thus products of deep, rational, and wisdom-based perspectives, playing a vital role in the health and stability of human relationships.
The Qur’anic and Prophetic emphasis on desirable verbal interactions should not be regarded merely as abstract moral injunctions; rather, they constitute psychologically grounded guidelines for fostering a peaceful and successful individual and social life. Contemporary psychological research not only fails to contradict these teachings but also empirically affirms their depth and effectiveness, providing rational motivation for adherence to them. Empirical studies demonstrate that effective verbal communication plays a central role in strengthening relationships, enhancing life satisfaction, resolving conflicts, and reinforcing emotional bonds. Open, respectful, and empathetic communication facilitates mutual understanding, trust-building, and the overall effectiveness of interpersonal and social relationships.
A careful examination of Qur’anic verses and the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) reveals that Islamic teachings present various motivational incentives aimed at improving verbal communication and introducing its key manifestations. Among the most significant motivational and encouraging dimensions of verbal interaction emphasized in Qur’anic and Hadith sources are the following:
First, encouraging the use of beautiful and refined language in verbal communication. Islam considers the use of noble and appropriate words an essential expectation in interpersonal relations, and the Qur’an calls upon all people to engage in good and graceful speech. Such verbal conduct contributes to the consolidation of relationships, the strengthening of social bonds, and the enhancement of social acceptance.
Second, promoting gentle language and discouraging verbal harshness. The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes soft speech, avoidance of rudeness, and the adoption of dignified and gracious discourse, presenting gentleness in communication as a means of fostering intimacy, empathy, and positive transformation. Conversely, harshness and verbal aggression are portrayed as leading to social alienation and relational disintegration.
Third, encouraging truthful, coherent, and comprehensible speech. Islamic teachings, particularly the Qur’an, call for qawl sadīd—speech that is firm, truthful, and free from falsehood and injustice. The Qur’an discourages futile argumentation and instead advocates rational dialogue and constructive debate conducted in the best possible manner.
Fourth, motivating individuals to observe respectful, courteous, and pleasant forms of expression. From the Qur’anic perspective, speech should be dignified, respectful, gentle, and emotionally considerate, as verbal expressions exert profound psychological and emotional effects on others and play a decisive role in cultivating empathy, mutual respect, and the overall well-being of social relationships
