Ethical altruism is one of the major teleological theories in normative ethics, seeking to promote the greatest good for others, regardless of self-interest. This study, employing a descriptive–analytical method, aims to provide a conceptual clarification and moral evaluation of altruism by examining its psychological foundations, rational arguments, and major objections. Psychological altruism constitutes the primary basis of this theory, challenging the thesis of human mono-motivation and affirming the coexistence of altruistic and egoistic desires.
The findings of this research indicate that altruism can only achieve coherence if it acknowledges both self-regarding and other-regarding motivations within human nature. Reducing all actions either to egoism or to pure altruism proves insufficient. From a psychological perspective, empirical evidence supports the existence of genuine altruistic tendencies. However, the scope of ethical altruism should not be confined exclusively to others, neglecting the agent’s self and independence. An altruist must also be able to discern the genuine good of others and avoid creating dependency.
